A Big Lesson of History

(on reading Jeff Ramsey’s Back to

the Future, Mmgi June 11-17-1993)

When seasons change

The greenness browns

And fossilizes into

The deep crusty ground

To be unearthed by

The archcuriosity of man…

As seasons change

Events and lives unfold

Stories are told

Legends and myths of old

Are created

To be imprinted

On the collective mind

And engraved on monuments of time.

Through coldness of heart

Or with passion that burns

Every person plays a part

As the historical world turns…

Says Imperialism in the unmaking of History:

Happy is the nation that has no history.

By this standard there can be fewer

Nations in Africa happier than Bechuanland…”

But History pulls us out of a deep slumber

By boldly stating:

Seretse Khama says:

A Nation without a past is a lost nation

A nation without a culture is

A nation without a soul…”

History will grab us by our colonial ties

And strangle our dusty throats

Until the eyes bulge open and breath chokes

And we splatter and vomit all the lies

As History teaches us a lesson

In accounting

By demanding:

Were you there when History

Was tortured by syllabi

And buried by Social Studies?

Were you there when Geography

Was his best buddy?

Were you there when Education

Was of the Bantu kind?

Were you there when textbooks

Colonized the mind?

Were you there when the sacred land

Of our fearless fathers was desecrated

By a hairy white and greedy hand?

Were you there when the cradle of our birth

Was robbed, rocked and razed to the earth?

And the soil of our birth

Became the stone of our death…

Did you hear in the culture of silence

About the neo-connivance

Of our leaders –heirs of the brave and victorious at Dimawe,

And our cheaters –sons of the vanquished Boers,

To sell our souls

For six pieces of gold?

But History, stronger than granite,

Will explode the myths more potent than dynamite

When you have to account for your birthright:

Were you there when?

Were you there?

Were you?

Where?

Una Grande Lezione dalla Storia

(leggendo Ritorno al futuro di Jeff

Ramsey, Mmgi June 11-17-1993)

Quando cambiano le stagioni

E il verde si fa scuro

E si fossilizza dentro

La crosta profonda del terreno

Per essere dissotterrato

Dalla archeocuriosità dell’uomo…

Come le stagioni cambiano

Eventi ed esistenze si dispiegano

Storie si raccontano

Leggende e miti d’antico

Chiedendo:

Eravate lì quando la Storia

Fu torturata dai programmi

E sepolta dagli Studi Sociali?

Vendere i nostri cuori

Eravate?

Dove?
